Welcome to Gratitude Gems, where I show a little appreciation for the good things in my life!
I don’t believe in war for the sake of war. I understand why we maintain our armed forces – violent conflicts are part of the world we live in after all – but one of the reasons I love my country is because Canada is primarily a peace-loving nation. Instead of instigating fights or sending in drones, we want to help those who have been affected by tragedy and loss and reinforce the need for peaceful negotiations and solutions.
That doesn’t mean that war doesn’t have a time and place. My Grandpa was part of the Royal Canadian Air Force in WWII and I believe that he fought to defend a freedom from intolerance and prejudice and genocide when there was no chance for a peaceful resolution. This Wednesday we commemorate the end of WWI hostilities on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. I don’t know what it’s like to live in constant fear and suffering, and I recognize that this is largely due to the bravery of others.
While I wish we didn’t need our armed forces, I commend each and every soldier for putting their lives on the line so that others don’t have to. Thank you so much, to all of you, the survivors and the fallen, for your sacrifice for our country and our world.
