Welcome to Gratitude Gems, where I show a little appreciation for the good things in my life!
I just had 10 days off in a row for the holidays so coming back to work, especially on a Monday, feels very hard to do.
I’m not in the mood to work. I’d rather be putting away my Christmas decorations, or cleaning up a bit after the whirlwind that is the holidays, or cuddling with my dog, or just about anything else. I don’t want to work when my mind is still full of Christmas fun and New Years celebrations and relaxation and lazy days. I imagine I’m not the only one who feels like this today.
Still, as I whine about my awesome job with great perks, I can’t help but be reminded of just how lucky I am that I have a workplace to return to after the holidays this year. Here in Alberta, we’ve been hit hard by the dropping oil prices, and many, many people have been put out of a job over the last 6 or 8 months. I don’t know anyone personally who has been affected by these lay offs, but I’ve heard rumblings about the difficulties these people are facing as they try to find new jobs. I can only imagine how hard these holidays must have been for them in the face of unemployment.
And so I find that as I sit here, on my comfy office chair while on my paid lunch break in my air conditioned office, it turns out I’m happy indeed to be back at work.
Here’s to a new year with new possibilities for those who may be down on their luck this January, and here’s to the rest of us starting the year off right by appreciating what we have, including the jobs we sometimes think we’d rather not.
