Gratitude Gems: Baby-Inspired Generosity

a hand-me-down

Welcome to Gratitude Gems, where I show a little appreciation for the good things in my life!

I already knew that we have some amazing family and friends who are very generous with their time and money, but no event in our lives has highlighted that fact for us quite so clearly as our pregnancy.  I knew that one of the perks of having kids later in life, or at least later than most people we know, would mean that many of our friends and family would not only have wisdom to impart but other things as well.  I just didn’t quite realize the scale.

Within the first few months of pregnancy, we already received offers of things that other parents still had and no longer needed, and boxes of baby clothes and toys, and even maternity clothes, were quickly sent our way.  But then we also received other supplies too: items such as bottles, disposable diapers, cloth diapers, a diaper bag, a swing, a play chair, and a breastfeeding pillow.  One of our friends doesn’t even live in the same city, but on one of her recent trips here she stopped by just to give us some of these things.

It’s not just the “small stuff” either.  We’ve also received a stroller, a play pen, a bassinet and a rocking chair – the same rocking chair that my Mom used when I was a baby!  And just last week we picked up some larger furniture: a crib, an armoire, and a changing table!  Almost all of these items may be gently used, but they are given with love, and these folks have given us these items free of charge and expectations.  Their generosity is incredible!

Aside from buying a couple of onesies here and there, a decoration or two, and of course a couple of stuffies, we haven’t spent a cent on this baby yet.  And it’s looking like we’ll need to spend very little now!  But these acts aren’t just saving us money.  Receiving these items also saves us the time and effort and stress we would have spent picking them out, which means we have more time to relax and enjoy the whole experience!  Our nursery is full already, nearly two months early, and that feels incredible!

From the bottom of our hearts, we want to thank each and every one of you.  You can be sure that the kindness and thoughtfulness you’ve shown in our time of impending parenthood will not be forgotten any time soon!
